"It is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all"

There they were as I walked along the sidewalk that time and drought had lifted and cracked, the first fireflies of summer. They were scattered throughout the dark woods and at the very moment I saw their iridescent magic. I watched as they blinked and I forgot for a moment all that might have been wrong and remembered instead all that was right.

There should be a place  somewhere in our lives that encourages us to reflect and to appreciate the extraordinary gifts of Nature along with the ordinary things that make up our lives. The more time passes, the more I understand how important it is to take notice of all the simple things that are woven into my day. I hope to continue to discover and with this blog, share, those things that are close to the Earth and are there for us always, while we are busy looking somewhere else.

This is a picture of one of my vegetable gardens and one of my chicken coops. This garden is mostly used for my fall crops like lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, carrots, potatoes, garlic, onions, and lingering peppers. The large clay pots are filled with herbs and annuals and are near my kitchen. My summer garden is behind the clothesline in a field that gets full sun. That garden is delicious; it begins the season with strawberries and continues its bounty with tomatoes, snap beans, okra, bell peppers, cucumbers, squash, cantaloupe, and zucchini. I love the play of near evening light in this photo. The vertical posts will soon be host to pickets and I will have a much needed fence to keep the bunnies away from my lettuces and the dogs away from my "ladies". My husband and 20 year old twins are building the fence. I am happy to say that the fence will be constructed from old wood that was no longer safe for our deck.

I hope this web site can provide a platform for exchange and sharing. I look forward to "hearing" from you and sharing all the simple things that make your life wonderful. p.s.

 Welcome to my web site.

I created this site in an effort to write about and bring awareness to things that are simple and close to the earth. I named my little site “sketches of my day”, because, on occasion, I will post little drawings or paintings like the one below and some of them will be for sale (and some will not be).I thought the name suiting. Anyway, I hope you enjoy going through these pages and I hope you connect to what this site is about.

Moon flowers open at night so they can  be pollinated by moths .

Did you know  ladybugs have two sets of wings?I have learned that the top set help to protect them against their enemies (who doesn't love a ladybug?) and the set underneath is used to fly away home.

to shape ourselves

we imagine
we ought

who we already are
